    1356- 1524………………..B

    1187 – 1355………………..C

    < 1016…………………….F

Should the Instructor see fit, additional assignments may be added to enhance student learning and understanding. This will increase the total points possible – thereby increasing student opportunity of achieving a better grade. This will be done giving the student ample time for completion.

    STUDENT STATEMENT

I understand the above grading policy and will abide by its terms.

    (3) Flash Cards

This is a 3.0 unit course. College guidelines tell you to plan to study six – nine hours per week to keep up with the material.

Flash cards are to be submitted no later than 11:59 pm on the date indicated in the Course Work section of this syllabus. Use the following guidelines in submitting online flash cards:

Using word parts and vocabulary terms (provided in the study guide), submit 50 medically recognized, correctly spelled medical terms for each chapter covered. You are free to choose any 50 terms.

Provide a definition for each term. Where appropriate, attempt to define terms based on word parts rather than dictionary definitions – this will increase your memorization of often-used terminology.

    Terms should be numbered 1 – 50.

    Example:

    1. gastroenterology – the study of the stomach and intestines

    2. congenital – present at the time of birth

Assignments are to be emailed to Instructor as a Microsoft Word Document attachment. Instructor will not accept flash cards typed directly into email text – text is often received unformatted and difficult to read.

NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT INSTRUCTOR PRIOR APPROVAL.

    (4) Discussion Questions

The discussion board is intended to simulate in-class student / Instructor interaction. Each week, the discussion board has two components.

  • Case Study: based on body system being studied, students are to respond to one Instructor-posted question. The questions will be updated roughly every three – four student postings to further understanding. Though only one posting is required, students are encouraged to participate in the discussion board throughout the week to advance learning. (20 points)
    • Terminology Train: Instructor will begin week by posting one term from the weekly lesson. The first student to visit the discussion board is to define that term. That student is then to post another term. The next student to visit the discussion board is to define that term, post another….and so on. No terms may be repeated. (5 points)

    Example:

    Instructor posts: cardiomyopathy

Student 1 posts: disease of the heart muscle

    Student 1 posts: nosocomial infection

Student 2 posts: hospital acquired illness

    Student 2 posts: malignant

    Etc…….until everyone has posted

Students are to make both required discussion board postings no later than 11:59 pm on the date indicated on the homepage.

NO LATE DISCUSSION BOARD POSTINGS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT INSTRUCTOR PRIOR APPROVAL.

    (5) Examinations

All weekly exams will be based upon the textbook reading, Instructor-provided study guide, and discussion board topics. The instructor strongly recommends utilizing the CD-ROM accompaniment to further understanding.

The midterm examination will be based on all material covered to that date – see Course Work section of this syllabus for exam date and testable chapters.

The final examination requires proctor supervision. See course homepage for proctor forms and instructions.

THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP TESTING FOR MISSED EXAMS WITHOUT INSTRUCTOR PRIOR APPROVAL.

    (6) Email Updates

One of the primary methods of contact in an online course is email. BCC is capable of extracting student names and email addresses from our registration system. The purpose of extracting this information is two fold.

The information will be used by the Instructor to remain in contact with the class in order to provide information necessary for the students’ academic success.

The information will also be used to send emails to the students from the college administration. The emails sent by the administration will consist of links to course surveys; which will be used to improve our online courses, important announcements for students, and links to college surveys, which will be used to satisfy requirements placed on the college by the California Community college Chancellor’s Office.

The college will not use student information to advertise any products and will not share student email addresses with any other organization.

    Student Statement:

In the box below, type the following information:

As a student, I understand it is my responsibility to ensure my email address is up to date in the registration system, and that failure to do so can seriously impact my ability to successfully complete my courses. Further, I consent to receive email communication from my instructor and from the college administration. This consent will remain in force until it is revoked in writing or I am no longer taking classes with the college. Upon submitting the syllabus, I agree to enter the registration system, check my email address, and change it if necessary. I understand a tutorial is available to assist me with this procedure. I also understand I can contact 760-252-2411 ext. 7236 to receive additional assistance if I encounter any difficulties when attempting to change my email address.
