When I was 18, I enlisted in the Army and proudly served as a medic for 4 years. Though young, I found a knack for medicine and healthcare. It became my passion and I eagerly accepted every learning opportunity available. I was fortunate enough to work in the Emergency Department, on the Intensive Care Unit, Same-Day Surgery, and Labor and Delivery.
After completing my enlistment in 2001, I found myself a proud Army wife with a beautiful daughter, and on the way to Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. While there, I attended nursing school at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Though difficult with my husband deployed to Afghanistan and later Iraq, I graduated in 2004. Soon after, began working in a Women’s Health Clinic. While there, I realized my favorite part of nursing wasn’t helping sick people – it was keeping patients healthy. Patient Education was much more fun than being coughed on!
Since then, I have devoted the past two years to teaching the subjects I love. I believe a solid educational background is the foundation of a successful career in healthcare. That educational background should include critical thinking and practical application. This is a career (which ever direction healthcare takes you in) that does not sit behind a desk counting numbers. We have to be engaging, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable.
