Weekly Pre-tests and Post-tests
The weekly and final examinations will be based upon the reading, any media presentations, and online lecture notes. The final exam will be cumulative and will occur during the last week of class at Barstow College in a proctored setting. If you cannot take the final exam on the main campus, you must follow proctor procedures to find a suitable proctor and this proctor must be approved by the instructor prior to the final exam. However, if you live in the Barstow area, you must take the exam at the college. All weekly quizzes may be accessed by any computer of your choice in MyNursingLab.com
Discussion Forum
The discussion forum can be found at the bottom of the front page of the bcconline.com area under the Discuss tab.
Typically, the instructor places a thought-provoking topic for students to respond to in the discussion forum. This is difficult to do in a Pharmacology course. I would like to use the discussion forum as a "class room" discussion arena. Each student will be asked to post either a:
The posting must be of substance - I agree with so-and-so about such-and-such is not adequate. You must contribute to an on-going conversation or attempt to answer a question posted.
You may post as many times as you would like. You may not use this forum to complain about the course or to offer suggestions how to make the course "better". Those conversations should take place in a private e-mail to the instructor.
Important Course Information:
Reading, homework and discussion questions are to be submitted no later than 11:45pm Sunday for the week assigned. I recommend you remain current with reading assignments so as not to fall behind. Each week, the assigned reading covers approximately 3-4 chapters. Quizzes will be based upon reading and discussion question topics. Any student having difficulty with the assignments should contact me before the test or discussion response is due.
If you begin failing this course, I will attempt to contact you to discuss any problems you may be experiencing. However, if after 3 failing scores and if I believe you do not have a chance to succeed, I reserve the right to notify you and drop you from the course. While this could affect your financial aid status, I am more concerned with your knowledge of pharmacology and the safety of your future patients. If you have any concerns with this - please do not hesitate to contact me very early in the course.
Drop Policy:
If you do not fully participate in the course by 11:45 PM Sunday the first week, you will be dropped from the course. If you foresee a problem preventing full participation in the first week, you need to email me immediately. After the first week, it is your responsibility to make sure you drop the course or you will receive an F in the course.
E-Mail Updates
One of the primary methods of contact in an online course is email. The college is capable of extracting student names and email addresses from our registration system. The purpose of extracting this information is twofold. The information will be used by me to remain in contact with the class in order to provide information necessary for your academic success. The information will also be used to send emails to the students from the college administration. The emails sent by the college administration will consist of links to course surveys which will be used to improve our online courses, important announcements for students, and links to college surveys, which will be used to satisfy requirements placed on the college by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office. The college will not use this information to advertise any products and will not share student email addresses with any other organization.
Please do not use MyNursingLab to email me. Please email me at dheadrick@bcconline.com
Emails without a subject line topic may not be read. With the current high incidence of computer viruses and unsolicited mail, I may automatically delete any messages inappropriately labeled.
If sending an email requesting help, problems, or questions - you can expect a 24 - 48 hour response time. I work as a nurse practitioner in a clinic Monday - Wednesday and do try to check emails each day but if the clinic day is a little more hectic than usual, it may take an extra day to look at email. I will look at email (for sure) Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and school holidays. However, if I am out of town and away from computer access, it could be a little bit slower.
I appreciate your understanding of the above stated timeline and will try to respond to ALL questions and concerns about this class within the timeframes stated above.
At the conclusion of the class, students may find out their grades by calling 760-252-6868 (local or out of state) and 877-336-6868 (toll free within California). You may also find out your grade by going on the Internet at http://bcregweb.barstow.edu/.
Student Statement:
In the box below, type the following information:
As a student, I understand it is my responsibility to ensure my email address is up to date in the registration system, and that failure to do so can seriously impact my ability to successfully complete my courses. Further, I consent to receive email communication from my instructor and from the college administration. This consent will remain in force until it is revoked in writing or I am no longer taking classes with the college. Upon submitting the syllabus, I agree to enter the registration system, check my email address, and change it if necessary. I understand a tutorial is available to assist me with this procedure. I also understand I can contact 760-252-2411 ext. 7236 to receive additional assistance if I encounter any difficulties when attempting to change my email address.
