Email Updates
One of the primary methods of contact in an online course is email. Your college is capable of extracting student names and email addresses from our registration system. The purpose of extracting this information is two fold. The information will be used by the instructor to remain in contact with the class in order to provide information necessary for the students' academic success. The information will also be used to send emails to the students from the college administration. The emails sent by the college administration will consist of links to course surveys which will be used to improve our online courses, important announcements for students, and links to college surveys, which will be used to satisfy requirements placed on the college by the California Community College Chancellor's Office. The college will not use this information to advertise any products and will not share student email addresses with any other organization. In the box below type the following information: As a student I understand it is my responsibility to ensure my email address is up to date in the registration system, and that failure to do so can seriously impact my ability to successfully complete my courses. Further, I consent to receive email communication from my instructor and from the college administration. This consent will remain in force until it is revoked in writing or I am no longer taking classes with the college. Upon submitting the syllabus, I agree to enter the registration system, check my email address and change it if necessary. I understand a tutorial is available to assist me with this procedure. I also understand I can contact 760-252-2411 x7236 to receive additional assistance if I encounter any difficulties when attempting to change my email address.
Critical Thinking:
Critical thinking will be demonstrated by:
Method of Instruction:
Students must complete all nine lessons. Each lesson will consist of a reading assignment, homework problems, assigned posting to discussion group, quiz, chapter learning objectives and lecture notes. In addition, there will be a proctored midterm and final examination.
Students are expected to:
Reading Assignments are expected to be completed weekly.
Homework problems will be assigned for every lesson except week 9. Students are strongly encouraged to complete all homework problems to ensure understanding and practical application of material. The quizzes and exams do depend heavily on the homework problems. These assignments should not be sent to instructor. Full homework credit will be given when weekly posting is complete (see weekly posting).
Weekly Posting should be completed prior to taking the lesson quiz. For full credit, post the solution to one of the homework problems not already posted. Make sure to show all work, not just the numeric answer. Some lessons will require you to post one or more problems and/or a response to a critical thinking question. Please read weekly posting assignment carefully and post accordingly.
Full credit can also be earned by posting an alternative solution to solve a previously posted problem. Word problem solutions that are posted will get .5 pts more credit than posting a drill problem solution.
Sample posting: Chapter 1, p. 31, #10
$35,000 + $3000 = $38,000 (total cost)
$38,000 ÷ 50 (# payments) = $760 a month

Quizzes are assigned for every lesson. Quiz format will be multiple choice and automatically scored when submitted. Each quiz can be taken only one time. Late quizzes will not be accepted. It is crucial to complete all quizzes as midterm and final depend heavily on homework and quiz problems. It is important to note that quizzes are worth 25% of your grade.
Learning Objectives are given to students for each chapter to help students to focus on key material.
Lecture Notes will be provided for each chapter. These notes will include a highlight of chapters and some example problems with solutions. These notes are not a substitute for reading the text. Students are responsible for all information in assigned readings as well as lecture notes.
Midterm and Final
The midterm exam will be closed book/no calculator and the final exam will be open book/calculator allowed. Both exams consist of multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, essay or any combination of these formats. Midterm will cover information from chapters 1 – 7. Final will cover material from chapters 8 – 12. These tests are both proctored examinations (see proctor requirements). Study guides will be available no later than two week prior to examinations. You will not be able to access examinations but once so make sure that you allow yourself enough time to complete each examination in one sitting. Examinations must be completed prior to closing time at one of the approved testing facilities.
In box below please type, I understand that the midterm and final are proctored examinations and it is my responsibility to find an approved proctor and location. My completed proctor form will be submitted to instructor prior to the end of the second week of class for instructor approval. I understand that if proctor arrangements are not approved in advance I may be denied access to one or both of the examinations which could result in failing the course.
Time Commitment/Due Dates:

Proctor Statement:
If a student is unable to come to either the Fort Irwin Education Center or the Main Campus Computer lab to take an examination, it is the student’s responsibility to find an approved proctor, such as a librarian, military educational officer or clergy member, and an approved site such as a library, military education office, or a church. The student must fill out the proctor form completely and submit it to instructor before the end of the second week of class. The instructor must approve the proctor arrangements in advance. Family members, supervisors or friends are not suitable proctors. As soon as the instructor has approved the proctoring arrangements, she will send a copy of the exam to the proctor. The exam still must be completed and sent to the instructor during exam week. It is mandatory that the instructor be notified before the end of the second week of class that you plan to take the exam by proctor so that the instructor has time to approve the proctor and location. Failure to notify instructor in advance of plans to take examinations through a proctor could jeopardize being able to take examination and possibly failing course. This will be strictly enforced! Please be sure that the Proctor has an email address so that the link can be emailed to them with the username and password to gain access to examinations.
All proctors must be librarians, military educational officers, college professors, professional proctors (such as our lab aides), teachers or clergy.
The proctor must have a professional email address and phone. (hotmail, yahoo, excite, aol, netscape, earthlink, verizon, netzero, msn, etc email accounts are unacceptable).
The email address must correspond to a school or business.
Syllabus Disclaimer:
A syllabus is not a contract between the instructor and the student but rather a guide to course procedures on attendance, requirements, grading and objectives. The instructor reserves the right to amend syllabus when necessary. Students will be dully notified. For this reason it is essential for students to check instructor message board at the top of the discussion board for pertinent information pertaining to class.
Academic Honesty:
Plagiarism is claiming as your own a paper, report, article, outline or speech which is in whole or in part was prepared by someone other than you. Plagiarism will result in a grade of F on assignment and could result in failure of course.

When emailing your instructor:
You must explain the problem in the subject line, i.e., BADM 51, Research 1 -- no research available. Email without an appropriate subject line will be deleted and will not be read. With the current high incidence of viruses and unsolicited email I automatically delete all email without appropriate subject lines.
Remember I do not answer email on the weekends, so 48 hours response time do not include Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. If an email stating problem, help, or question in the subject line is sent on Monday through Thursday you can expect a response within 24-48 hours. If an email stating problem, help, or question in the subject line is sent on the weekends there will be a longer turn around time, but the email will be answered by Tuesday of the following week.
Email assignments will have a one week turnaround time, and you should not expect an answer to a successfully submitted and completed assignment before the end of the one week turnaround time period. Receiving graded assignments, or answers to your questions, before the above stated timelines have passed does not guarantee that you will receive replies that quickly in the future.

Students are not to post in the instructor's posting area. Should you have a concern with your class please email me your question. It is not appropriate for students to post their concerns in the instructor's posting area. Students who post in the instructor's posting area will receive a warning and their posting will be deleted unanswered. Students who ignore the warning and post again to the instructor's posting area will be dropped from the class.
At the conclusion of the class students may find out their grades by going on the Internet at
