About the Instructor: Ms. Born

Interestingly, I started my college career through a sign language class in Adult Education. The class was held in the Humanities Building of Cypress Community College, and I remember being awed by the fact that I was on a college campus. You see, I never believed I was smart enough (or rich enough) to attend college. This belief kept me from my dream of becoming a teacher for a long time. Through that sign language class, however, I caught a glimpse of what could be. I grabbed on to that vision, and I held on. The experience has been invigorating. Today, I have completed three college degrees with highest honors (AA, BS, MBA). My Associate of Arts degree, however, is the degree that I hold most dear to my heart because it is the one that gave me the belief in myself and the courage to continue on.

Follow your dreams -- use education as your vehicle! My path to teaching high school, interestingly, began through teaching college classes. After working as a sign language interpreter and Deaf Services Coordinator for several years, I started working in the office of my graduate school where I next became the director of admissions. As I completed my own education, I began to see my childhood dream unfold as I was given opportunities to teach. I began this journey into teaching teenagers several years ago when I stepped out of the college office and into a full-time teaching position. I walked in during the second week of school teaching seventh grade math and science and found myself hooked from the start. I have thoroughly enjoyed my years teaching teenagers and have also continued teaching adults in local community colleges and the B.U.S.D. adult education program. Some of the college courses I have taught include: Business Writing and Business Communications (Cal State Fullerton and Cerro Coso) Research Writing, Organizational Behavior, Intro to Management, Intro to Business, and Applied Statistics (Hope International University), and American Sign Language (seven years at Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest).

From these experiences, I have learned how I learn. This journey has led me to a greater understanding and appreciation for the similarities and differences in how each of us learn. My personal mission is to be a bridge that helps connect others to their personal goals and dreams. So let's continue on a learning journey together--we will learn from each other along the way.
