Meet Your Instructor: Mr. LinstromWelcome to this online course: Emergency Management Recovery. My name is John Linstrom. I have been teaching in some form since 1984. I coordinated the Barstow College Emergency Medical Technician Training and Allied Health classes from 1984 to 1988.

In 1988 I started teaching in the fire technology program at Victor Valley College in Victorville until 1993. I also taught fire officer certification classes for the California State Fire Marshal. In 1994 I became an adjunct instructor for the National Fire Academy. I then taught disaster response courses for the Texas Department of Emergency Management. In 2002 I finished my B.S. degree in Fire Protection Admin. I have also completed the National Executive Fire Officer program at the National Fire Academy, an online instructor’s certificate program and the California and Texas firefighter, officer, instructor, fire investigator and prevention officer certification tracks.

I am certified as a Master firefighter, Master inspector and Member of the Institution of Fire Engineer's. I also was a founding member of the Department of Homeland Security and hold Board Certification from the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute.

As a career, I spent 22 years in the fire service and retired at the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. I was a paramedic for 15 of those years. I have held assignments as the Emergency Management Coordinator for three cities and one corporate entity. For the past seven years, I have been consulting and developing disaster plans and training programs. I am currently an adjunct faculty member at Barstow College, Texas A&M University and Northwestern University in Chicago. I responded to several tornadoes, the World Trade Center attack on 9/11 and to Hurricane Katrina as well as over 8,000 smaller emergencies. I am still involved in disaster response as a federal management team member and a disaster medical team Commander. I have published one textbook and frequently lecture and write for national fire and homeland security journals and conferences. I am pursuing a Masters Degree in Homeland Security as well.

I am looking forward to meeting you and all of us learning way more than you thought was possible over the course of this course.

A reply to all of my postings are required. They should be insightful and well thought out and well written. It is the equivalent of your in class discussion and counts for a large portion of your grade. Part of adult learning is challenging your ideas and promoting self discovery where you and your peers learn as much from each other as you do from me.

What are your immediate goals? What are your objectives in taking these courses? I would like you to post a brief biography regarding your preparation for you career thus far.
