Holistic Grading Rubric For Art
Art is not a subject that can easily be graded based on written or oral testing. Since art is a subjective topic, not everyone views the same work with the same opinion. As a Teacher, I will base your grades on several criteria. This will ensure a fair evaluation for everyone’s work.
1. Quality of craftsmanship.
2. Originality of ideas.
3. Ability to learn from constructive criticism.
4. Cooperation with fellow art students on joint projects
5. Participation in class critiques.
6. Willingness to accept new ideas.
7. Comprehension of design principles.
8. Organizational skills.
9. Projects completed by due date.
10. Neat and well organized portfolio.
Each student will have the opportunity to talk to me about grades during the course. If you feel you have been critiqued unfairly, please address the subject with me, not your classmates. Grades are a private matter and you should never compare work or grades to anyone else’s. At the end of the semester, each student may sit down with me to discuss the art work in their portfolio.
The following is a guide to my grading system
A = Meets and exceeds all expectations
B = Meets all expectations
C = Meets most expectations
D = Meets some expectations
F = Does not adequately satisfy the criteria as defined above
If the student feels that his or her project did not get the grade it deserved, there will be an opportunity to resubmit the project at a later date. The project must have a significant improvement over the first project to receive a higher grade.
A word of encouragement: If you are doing your best to complete quality work and adhere to the grading criteria, you will do very well in this class. I do not grade on “the Bell Curve”. Every member of class can receive an “A”.
A word of
warning: If you choose to “hang” in class and do nothing, it would be best for
you to transfer to the Introduction to Nothing 101 class so you don’t waste our
time and your money. Once the art program has begun, the art class will fees
will not be refunded because that money will have been spent ordering art
supplies. It isn’t hard to grade nothing. “F”
