Lecture 1

Welcome to Speech 3! Teaching this course is such a pleasure and you will find this semester extremely interesting and challenging. We have students taking this course from around the world and that will make for great discussions as we go through the semester. I prefer to teach this course in a very extemporaneous manner! I expect the course to work in a very interactive manner. I will assign readings from the text each week. You are expected to read ALL the assigned material and participate in ALL discussions. I will refer to questions in the text and I will ask you to relate the material in the book to real life situations. We communicate all day long! I want you to relate your communication experiences with the readings in the text. We will have up to 60 students in this course. We will learn from up to 60 different students how they related to the material - The course becomes a complete blast and you will find yourself looking forward to our discussions.  J

First things First! Introductions, you can read my intro on the instructor BIO page. I would like to add a couple of items. I love teaching this course for Barstow Community College. Barstow College has a fond place in my heart! Your college has the most professional campus staff (faculty, Admin and all support) I've ever worked with in all my years of collegiate education. I will do everything in my power to make you successful in this course. You will need to assist me - by doing all the assigned readings and homework. I'm available anytime during our semester to assist you as my Speech 3 student. Feel free to contact me at 816-984-1879. This number goes directly to my house in Germany and is just like a normal long distance call to my (816) area code in Kansas City. Please try to call between 9:00-11:00 AM PST. I'm 9 hours ahead in Germany. In most cases an e-mail will suffice and my college e-mail is gcheek@bcconline.com. I want you to be rest assured that if we need to talk - I will make myself available! I will check my e-mail several times a day during the semester and voice messages when I get home in the evening.
